How to make a color palette from an image

Use a photo, logo, product image, or mood board as a starting point for a palette. Choose how many colors to extract, then review the dominant swatches beside the image. You can sample an additional point directly from the image when an important accent is missing, and copy the resulting HEX values or CSS variables for your design file.

  1. Upload or drop an image with the subject and colors you want to explore.
  2. Choose a palette size from 3 to 12 colors and inspect the suggested swatches.
  3. Click a color on the image to sample another point, then copy HEX, copy CSS variables, or export a palette card.

Get more reliable colors from photos

A sampled pixel records how the image looks, including its lighting, shadows, compression, and display profile. For a cleaner starting palette, use a sharp image and sample flat areas away from reflections or deep shadows. Treat extracted values as visual references rather than approved brand or print specifications. If your next step is to compare sampled colors with approximate print references, open the image-to-Pantone color finder.

What is the image color picker?

An image color picker extracts colors from a photo, screenshot or product shot. Upload or paste an image, click any pixel to read its HEX, or let the tool pull the dominant palette automatically, with RGB, CMYK and nearest Pantone for every color.

How the image color picker works

Two modes cover the two things people mean by picking a color from an image. Pixel mode reads the exact color under the cursor, with a magnifier so you can land on a single pixel of a logo or a UI screenshot. Palette mode clusters the whole image into its dominant colors (choose 3 to 12), ignores noise, and orders the result by area, so a product photo becomes a usable palette in one step.

Every color is shown as HEX, RGB, HSL, CMYK and OKLCH, with the nearest named color and the nearest Pantone Solid Coated reference and its Delta E. Drag any swatch to a different pin, swap colors, then copy, export or open the palette in the generator.

Privacy and file support

Images are processed in the browser with the Canvas API and never uploaded. PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, SVG and HEIC files work, as does pasting from the clipboard or dragging a screenshot in.

How to use the image color picker

  1. Drop an image onto the page, paste it, or click to upload.
  2. Click any point to read its exact color, or switch to Palette to extract the dominant colors.
  3. Adjust the number of colors and drag pins to refine.
  4. Copy a HEX, export the palette, or send it to the generator.

Image Color Picker FAQ

How do I find the HEX code of a color in an image?

Upload the image here and click the spot you want. The exact HEX appears with RGB, HSL and CMYK, plus a copy button.

What color is this? Can the tool identify a color from a photo?

Yes. Pixel mode returns the exact value and the closest named color, so a photo of a wall, fabric or product becomes a name and a code.

Can I get a Pantone color from an image?

Each extracted color shows its nearest Pantone Solid Coated reference with a Delta E distance. Use Image to Pantone for the full print workflow with coated and uncoated libraries.

Is the image uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser; the file stays on your device.
